Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan (Pamir) 2

Central Asia, Caucasus & Mongolia - Lighter 4x4 road trip: western Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, with own car or driver

Itinerary idea: Dushanbe, Iskanderkul, Seven Lakes, Penjikent, Khujand, Batken, Osh, Arslanbob, Kochkor and Song-Kol, Issyk-Kul, Bishkek

Strengths: Moderate altitude, high-mountain scenery without the Pamir’s toll, homestays and yurts, bazaars and Silk Road history, shorter stages, suitable for an 8-year-old

Weaknesses: The Guliston-Kyzyl-Bel border must be checked (car not confirmed), gravel on some stretches, a long day from Arslanbob to Kochkor, no serious medical help outside the towns

Children and safety: Much better suited to an 8-year-old than the high Pamir: you sleep below 2,300 m almost always. Only one optional night at 3,000 m (Song-Kol), to be done only if he feels well, otherwise sleep in Kochkor. Drives of 4-8 hours: short walks, a lake break, games in the car.

Weather: June to September. Hot in Dushanbe, Khujand and Osh, cooler in Arslanbob, cold nights at Song-Kol (near zero even in summer). Afternoon storms at altitude.

Book ahead: 6-9 months

The trip

You start in Dushanbe, a quiet capital at the foot of the mountains, and climb into the Fann Mountains. Iskanderkul (about 2,200 m) is a turquoise lake near the road, with a waterfall and easy walks. Then the Seven Lakes of the Marguzor valley, a chain of lakes in different colours, with villages where you sleep with a family and eat warm bread, cheese and plov. In Penjikent the Sogdian town and the UNESCO site of Sarazm tell the Silk Road story, and Khujand is a city of river and bazaars. Beyond the border everything changes: Osh and its bazaar, the walnut forests of Arslanbob and the highlands with yurts up to Song-Kol. It ends on Lake Issyk-Kul and in Bishkek.

Border and car

  • The Guliston-Kyzyl-Bel crossing is reported open to foreigners (September 2026 account), but crossing with a rental car is not confirmed.
  • Suggested plan: leave the car or driver in Tajikistan, cross, and take another car or a driver in Batken or Osh.
  • Check the rules 4-6 weeks before: crossings change hours and conditions with little notice.
  • Plan B: do only Kyrgyzstan, starting and ending in Bishkek.

Altitude and children

  • Nights: Dushanbe 830 m, Iskanderkul 2,200, Seven Lakes about 1,700, Osh 960, Arslanbob 1,600. Only Song-Kol (3,000 m, optional) is high.
  • The pass to Song-Kol is at about 3,400 m: go up in a day and, if the child has a headache or nausea, sleep in Kochkor.
  • Pulse oximeter, water, chocolate and games: the long drives work with breaks.
  • No serious medical help outside the towns: you need a policy with medical repatriation.
