Gentle Tajikistan: Fann Mountains and Wakhan
Central Asia, Caucasus & Mongolia - Touring trip by 4x4, self-drive or with a driver
Itinerary idea: Dushanbe, Iskanderkul, Seven Lakes, Penjikent, Qala i Khumb, Khorog, Wakhan valley, back to Dushanbe
Strengths: No night above 3,000 m, suitable for an 8-year-old, Fann Mountains and Wakhan in one trip, village hospitality, you start and end in Dushanbe, flights from Milan with one stop
Weaknesses: Long days in the car (up to 7-8 hours), damaged and unpaved roads, summer landslides and mudflows, poor mobile signal in the Wakhan, no serious medical help along the route, Afghan border area discouraged by some governments, GBAO permit required, no Murghab plateau or Karakul
Children and safety: Much better suited to an 8-year-old than the high Pamir: the highest night is in the Wakhan at about 2,800 m, all the others below 2,300 m. Days of 5-8 hours in the car: games, snacks and frequent breaks, short walks at the lakes. Simple lodgings (homestays, bathroom often outside). Bring a pulse oximeter and ask your paediatrician. If anyone sleeps badly or has a headache at altitude, shorten the Wakhan stop.
Weather: July and August are the most reliable months. Hot in Dushanbe, Penjikent and Qala i Khumb (even above 35 degrees), cooler at the Fann lakes and in the Wakhan (about 25 degrees by day and 10 at night). Summer storms can cause landslides and mudflows.
Book ahead: 6-9 months
The trip
From Dushanbe to the Fann Mountains with Lake Iskanderkul and the Seven Lakes, then along the Pamir Highway to Khorog and the Wakhan valley, and back to Dushanbe. Nights always below 3,000 m, in guesthouses and homestays. You travel with a local driver or rent an off-road vehicle in Dushanbe. Long days in the car but a manageable altitude: suitable for an 8-year-old.
Car and driver
A 4x4 with a local driver is recommended, also for the Fann and the Wakhan. Self-drive is possible with an off-road vehicle rented in Dushanbe.
- Where to rent: Dushanbe and Khorog.
- Cost: about 130-150 € a day for a Land Cruiser or similar.
- Typical conditions: power of attorney required (65-100 USD), cash deposit (600-800 USD), 250 km a day limit, insurance almost never included, minimum age 21-25.
- Ask in advance: booster or child seat, and a replacement car in case of breakdown.
Permits and borders
- Tajikistan: no visa for up to 30 days for Italians. GBAO permit required for every passport, children included, for Khorog and the Wakhan. Sources disagree on how to get it (online on the e-visa portal or at the Dushanbe office): check close to departure.
- At checkpoints you need many photocopies of passport and permit (6-10 per person).
- No border to cross: the trip starts and ends in Dushanbe.
- If travelling with one parent only, carry a consent letter (to be checked).

Alternatives
- High Pamir (Murghab, Karakul, Ak-Baital pass): this is the Pamir 4x4 trip, with nights above 3,600 m, only with proper acclimatisation.
- Bartang: 27 km of gravel after Rushan, then an easy walk to Jizeu.
- More days in the Fann: another night at Iskanderkul or the Seven Lakes, with a trip to Snake Lake and the waterfall.
- Khorog-Dushanbe flight by Tajik Air (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday): saves two days of driving but is often cancelled by weather, so only as an option.
Altitude and children
- Night altitudes: Dushanbe 830 m, Iskanderkul 2,200, Seven Lakes 1,700, Penjikent 1,000, Qala i Khumb 1,300, Khorog 2,100, Wakhan 2,800.
- No night above 3,000 m. The Bibi Fatima hot springs (about 3,500 m) are a day visit, for the bath, and you go back down to sleep.
- Children do not always show the signs of altitude sickness: pulse oximeter, water and your paediatrician's advice on any medication.
- No serious medical help along the route: you need a policy with medical repatriation.
Fuel, lodging and connectivity
- Fuel: stations sell almost only N92 petrol, pumps at Qala i Khumb, Khorog and Ishkashim, diesel only in Khorog.
- Lodging: homestays and guesthouses about 15-25 USD per person with dinner and breakfast (2025-2026 reports, to be confirmed), hotels in Dushanbe 55-140 USD a room.
- Connectivity: coverage in Dushanbe, Penjikent, Qala i Khumb and Khorog, poor at the Seven Lakes and in the Wakhan.
Safety
The road runs for days a few hundred metres from Afghanistan, along the Panj. Recent travellers report no problems, but the GBAO region is discouraged by some governments (United States level 3, Switzerland) for the border areas. Check the Italian Foreign Ministry advice 4-6 weeks before departure, and your insurance cover.
